It was more like he preferred to stay out of peoples way, and would rather not have his face beaten in for not being as loud as the other guys. He wished that he could be rowdy and party hard, but it had never been in his book. And it had kept his nose clean ninety nine percent of the time, along with maintaining his powers. He hadn’t gotten into a spot since coming to the island. He’d fainted a few times because of forced power use and had to stay in his dorm for a day because of exhaustion, but it hadn’t hurt anyone but himself. This seemed like a mere blessing to the boy.
Raul perched himself onto a leather couch and propped open a book to read. Philosophies were something that interested him since he was so interested in traveling someday. He figured that he would have to know government systems to get by in any country that he stayed at for a long period of time, and to slip between the cracks to make sure no one thought it unusual that a young boy was residing in another country for long periods of time and then disappearing. A good amount of base knowledge might at least give him a chance with locals.
It was about lunch time. No one was around, which was strange for the day, but he supposed that soon after lunch break was over a crowd would come pouring in. He hadn’t been hungry as of late, and therefore hadn’t felt the need to go to the ever so popular cafeteria. He figured he might lay around until a crowd came in, and then sneak off for a while to read his book. Maybe he’d play a game of foosball or something before going in. He wasn’t a total freak…He had a few people who were willing to play. And he usually didn’t mind playing, so long as they didn’t get to into the game. And if they did, so long as they understood that he wasn’t getting into it as much as they would.
Raul moved himself into a comfortable position, and read.

He brought with himself a chess set to analyze a position without taxing his mind through the blindfold method and a book about the Queen's Indian Defense. He also carried a cup of thick Turkish coffee. He never understood Indian defenses in chess because they ended up becoming too complicated and sharp. They had too many ways of transposing that he could never really grasp. Hopefully, this book would change some of that. He could also play blindfold chess, but he did not know too many people who also possessed that skill.
He also brought a copy of the Communist Manifesto to read so that he could fuel his obsession about Marxian politics. Many viewed him as an anti-social geek. They were not too far from the truth. He knew that he was socially inept. He consoled himself by perhaps believing that they would all one day thank him for some important discovery that would change humanity.
Abdul-Rahman set up the chess board and moved the pieces into the standard position for the Queen's Indian. Before he started to study any opening, he often liked to move pieces around simply to see if he could make his own breakthrough. Usually, it did not work. Opening theorists were much more adept at finding any novelties. However, he continued his habit anyway. He found nothing and so he opened the book and started to read. He took out a notebook and a pen to record any new ideas he might get.

So he was slightly disappointed when some kid walked in. Maybe not a kid, then again. He, Raul-Philippe, was after all only a puny little freshman. A freshman who couldn’t really stand up for himself and who shouldn’t be tempered with. This guy must have been much older…Junior or Senior, Raul would guess. He held a cup of some liquid and, oddly enough, carried a chess board with him. He felt slightly at ease when he saw that. Bullies didn’t tend to carry chess boards with them, not in a place like this. Not anywhere, really.
Raul tilted his head slightly to study the older male, but peered back to his book every once in a great while to make sure that, if caught, it would look like wandering. Really, that was all it was. Wondering, more like.
The book the older male was currently reading caught Raul-Philippe’s attention, however. Communist Manifesto was perhaps one of the books that Raul had not had a chance to look over, whether because it had escaped his attention or because he had not found it beneficial. Not being particularly social, Raul hesitated before bringing himself up and approaching the older boy, hoping that this was not some trick that would center him out.
”’Ello,” Raul said hesitantly, smiling shyly and cocking back his head. ”Um, you play at all?” he asked, motioning to the chess board. Raul had some interest in the game, not an obsession, but he had appreciation well enough. Maybe he could strike up a conversation of some sort.

He did not see how or why this move was so commonly played. It managed to fianchetto the light-squared bishop, but that was all that it managed to accomplish. Could Abdul-Rahman come up with his own alternative? He realized that he did not have the skill nor the experience to do something like that yet.
Abdul-Rahman wrote down the move and looked back in the book for the standard responses for Black. He took a long sip of the coffee before looking back down. Both of the commonly played main lines seemed to offer some counter-play for White's attack on the queenside.
As Abdul-Rahman was analyzing, some guy walked up and said something. Abdul-Rahman looked up.
"'Ello. Um, do you play at all?" he asked,
Abdul-Rahman thought for a second. "Well, I do play a lot. I officially have the International Master ranking, but I haven't played in a while. I'm just re-studying an opening. I never understood Indian Defenses beyond just well enough to do okay, but that was it. Hopefully, this will change that," he said, thinking of something to say at that exact moment. "Uhh, do you play chess?" he asked finally.
If the guy played chess, then Abdul-Rahman could take his mind off of opening thory for a second and go back to enjoying the game of chess for what it was-an elegant and beautiful game. He set his pen down and sipped the coffee once more.

But he didn’t really know much about chess. At least, he didn’t get that into it. Again, he just appreciated the game. However, had he had a large amount of cockyness when playing the game, it would have been deflated around this guy. It was strange, hearing such elegant and crafted words coming from a guy on this island. He was used to party hards. And was that a bit of an accent? He wanted to ask, but dared not to. He didn’t want to offend a possible ally.
“That’s…Pretty awesome, actually,” Raul said, his voice slightly awed. He didn’t have anything witty to say back, and even if he did, he didn’t think he could muster it. An odd respect welled up inside of him, a respect he didn’t usually have for others. “I play a little,” he said, smiling shyly. “My sister and I used to play when we were smaller…Nothing to big, like international master ranking, but I know the rules, he said all of this with an upright posture.
“I’m Raul Philippe…You can just call me Raul, though…” he shrugged, hoping the introduction would suffice. He was really at loss for words.

He sipped the coffee again before looking up to respond to Raul Philippe, as the person had introduced himself. He closed the book on the opening and put it on the ground.
"Well, I can teach you some of the basics of opening theory, but do you just want to play a game first? I can easily put off whatever I am doing right now. I really need to learn to take a break every once in a while," Abdul-Rahman said. Raul seemed to be much like Abdul-Rahman, so perhaps this could be a new friendship. He folded his arms in front of his chest before he stood up.
Abdul-Rahman knew that he had very little time in his rather busy schedule to actually take a break. However, he needed to make friends, so clearly this was an exception. The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology seemed intent to rob him of nearly all of his money just to read a few papers. What did he care? He never liked money.
"I'm Abdul-Rahman, by the way," he introduced himself. He extended his hand in greeting and managed to bear a smile.

If you’re willing. I probably won’t be much good, but what can it hurt, right?” he made his way down and thought to himself. How busy could this guy be? The island was surely a busy place, Raul himself could attest to that fact, but it surprised him that Abdul-Rahman sounded so busy. Perhaps he had a lot more intelligence then Raul could possibly fathom.
Yet, the fact was that Raul didn’t have a large amount of friends himself, and needed ally’s to keep his nose clean. Abdul-Rahman seemed like a good guy, and something inside of himself told him that this guy could be a good friend. Maybe they could discuss, something Raul hadn’t done for a long time with anyone. He’d been on the debate team at school and hoped that this was a true intellectual type…
Raul smiled and tilted his head. “Nice to meet you, Abdul-Rahman. he extended his hand and shook Abdul-Rahman’s hand. He wasn’t sure if it was simply a nice gesture or of he was really willing to spend time, but either way he was determined to attempt a gesture of friendship.

"That's okay. I just suddenly needed to fuel my obsession. I'm sort of a chess addict sometimes," Abdul-Rahman said. He chuckled inwardly. "I'll try to go easy," he said. In reality, that was much tougher that it sounded. He was programmed to take advantage of his opponents' mistakes. To punish them for their mistakes.
Abdul Rahman first cleared the chess board of all the pieces. He grabbed two pawns of either color before Raul could see. He held his two fists out and said "pick one."
He hoped that Raul would pick the white pawn. That way, it would be easier for Abdul-Rahman to play a bit more passively. He might also let Raul take control of the center in the opening phase. He realized that he was thinking too much. This was just supposed to be a relaxing game of chess. He could also point out mistakes.

He inwardly hoped that he was being sincer. Raul didn’t need to feel worse then he currently did. Raul looked at the two hands and then shrugged. He pointed at the let one, hoping that it would be white so that he could go first. That was the rules, right? White goes first? Ah, it had been such a long time since he’d played! He suddenly wished he had taken up chess club with some of his nerdier friends. It was so confusing sometimes!
However, being a visual guy, Raul assured himself that he’d pick up quickly. Pawns can only move one square after the first move, he reminded himself. Queens could move any way. A king was what your were protecting. Was it the bishop that moved diagnoly? Or was that the knight? No, he believed the knight moved in an L shape. He bit his lip, hoping it would work out better on the playing board then it would in his head. He wanted respect from this guy.

"Looks like you got white! Might help you out just a little bit," he said to Raul. He cleared the board of the previous position and then took all the Black pieces and set his side of the board.
Abdul-Rahman could not believe what he was actually doing. He was actually playing a relaxing game of chess entirely for fun. By now, he viewed anything he did simply as a chore. Why did he become so involved in so many things? He never knew why.
He helped Raul set the White side of the board. He quickly remembered that he was not being timed. He was rather relieved. He never particularly like being timed. After the other side of the board was set, he sat down. However, simply out of force of habit, he extended his hand before the game began.
"Good luck," he said.

He bit his lip and smiled when Abdul-Rahman opened his fist to reveal the white piece. He nodded to himself and began to help him set up, almost telling the guy to chill out with his quickness. However, he seemed to relax almost immediately without Raul having to say anything.
He sat down and nodded to himself. He tried to imagine his first couple of moves and then, at Abdul-Rahman’s word’s looked up and smiled. “Same to you,” he said, tilting his head. He wanted to say something more, but felt at loss. He moved the pawn furthest to his left forward by two, biting his lip and questioning if this would make any difference. He decided not to question himself. He would do enough of that later.
He felt slightly awkward just sitting there and gestured off handedly at Abdul-Rahman’s book. “You read much?”

He had not seen the Ware in a while. How should he respond to it? He looked over the two better responses. The move 1...e5 both challenged the new square for the rook and indirectly developed his dark-squared bishop. It also claimed the center aggressively. He decided to respond with that move. He gripped the King's pawn and moved it two squares ahead.
"Do you read much?" Raul asked.
"I love to read. I read a lot to relax. It allows me to actually relax. I've learned a lot from books. The Internet is a great resource, but books allow me to explore a subject farther in-depth. You?" he asked.
He waited for a rather standard response to his move. He knew that Raul would want to play a5 at some point to develop his rook. However, if he played a5 as his next move, Abdul-Rahman could simply respond with b5. That would allow him to both have control over the center and prevent his opponent from properly developing his rook to the intended square.

He felt nervous when Abdul-Raman made his move, clenching his teeth slightly. He didn’t understand any of the technicalities. It wasn’t like there was much at stake. Still, as he got into it, he realized how little he knew or really understood the details. He realized that there was zip way he could at all beat this guy. Sighing slightly, he bit his lip and advanced the pawn to his left up one, suddenly visualizing what he could do. He smiled and nodded. He didn’t realize he had just set himself up for disaster.
Raul nodded and grinned. “Cool. Yeah, I read to relax too. And to learn…I want to travel someday, and I figured it would probably be a good idea to know stuff before I do…I don’t want to walk into anything blind, you know what I mean?” he asked, studying the board and waiting for Abdul-Rahman’s next move. Abdul-Rahman knew that this move was coming. It was the only way to develop the queenside rook. However, Abdul-Rahman could easily take advantage of the position by challenging its squares. He knew that playing b6 would simply result in trading pawns, but b5 challenged the rook's open squares. So he played b5. He moved his queen's knight's pawn up by two squares.
He remembered that Raul was not too experienced and so felt the need to ask, "Wasn't that move a bit premature?" He knew that there were obvious ways for White to counterattack, but this game was to him as much a discussion as it was a game.
"Where exactly do you want to travel?" he asked. "I always found myself interested in random things. Right now, I might start on a project to reconstruct the proto-Turkic language. I'm going to need to head of to the Turkic states. If you want, I can manipulate companies in to letting you come too," he said.

In fact, he was currently doubting himself very much. Why had he been so stupid? As soon as Abdul-Rahman moved the piece, Raul blinked and moved his chess piece to take the pawn that had just moved to b5. He wasn’t aware as he needed to be, but this was just a game to him. When Abdul-Rahman spoke, he blinked and rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. ”I don’t really know many skills in the game. And I’m kind of tired,” he tried to explain, knowing it sounded weak and pathetic.
Raul looked over at Abdul-Rahman and tilted his head. ”Anywhere I can draw, man. And are you serious?” he blinked, expecting a just kidding look or a are you stupid look, but when he didn’t receive one, he smiled genuinely. ” Man, you have no idea how much that would mean to me…” the game was still on his mind, but at the same time he suddenly felt an odd happiness engulf him.
