"Let's begin, shall we? Tell me about yourself. I want to know everything."
Daphne was visibly nervous, her hands unable to remain still, her heart pounding, and her palms sweaty. She always got this way before important interviews, but she did her best to hide her anxiety. "Okay, uhm, my full name is Daphne Sapphire Cypher... I'm not quite sure what my parents were thinking! I mean, Sapphire? Really?" Daphne paused and tried to get back on topic. "Oh, right, right, continuing. I just turned sixteen a couple of weeks ago, on October twenty-third. I'm a sophomore at the moment, and I guess I do pretty well in my classes. I used to take honors classes and the like, so, I guess I'm smarter than the average bear. Heh, probably not by much." She blushed, running a hand through her hair. "I mean, certainly not compared to some of the kids here."
"All right. So you know the truth about this place. What exactly did we invite you to this school for?"
"Oh, I'm an omniglot! I can understand, and usually speak any language. It's not something that seems to be too useful, but, it's starting to expand past just spoken word." Daphne gesticulated, searching for what she wanted to say. "I mean, it's more of a constant type of thing, not something I can really turn on or off. But, like, in the past month or so, I started picking up on people's body language. And that doesn't seem to be as constant. I don't know, it goes... in and out." She looked to the ceiling, biting her lip in thought. "I hope it continues to develop, because could you imagine if I can start to understand all kinds of language?" Daphne grinned, her excitement pouring out of every pour. "I mean, in addition to the body language, I've also started understanding computer language. All the html and binary code, it's starting to make sense! And can you imagine if I start to understand the language of other living things, besides humans? Or the language of music? Of flowers? Medicine?" Daphne smiled wider than ever. "I just can't wait to start expanding my power. It seems so... limitless!"
"Oh yes. I see now why we would have invited you. Tell me please, a bit of background information. What is home life to you?"
Daphne picked at the hem of her skirt, her fingers unable to rest. If she was tense before, the new question amplified it to the max. "Oh, I would say my home life is pretty happy, compared to most. I've got two big brothers, Royce and Slade, they're twenty-one and nineteen, respectively. Royce is pretty normal, but, Slade went here for a couple of years. He can, um, it's kind of weird, but he's a gravity manipulator. It definitely made it weird playing games with him when he would lose his temper! But, oh, back to home... My parents are Rose and Darren, and they're really awesome. Like, they're really understanding, and, just pretty awesome in general, but, things have been... tense lately." Daphne trailed off, her voice growing quieter. "I think it's because Slade and I are first-generation, uh, 'gifted' kids. And, well, mom's trying to get into supreme court -she's a judge- and dad's business has been hit kinda hard the past couple of years..." Daphne sighed, pausing again. When she spoke next, it was back to her normal, bright voice. "I mean, it's so weird, I remember when I was a kid, and we used to do all of these cool family things, but we don't do that so much any more. Like, for my eleventh birthday, it was so awesome, we went and saw one of the new Disney movies, and then there was this party room where you got to draw all over the walls! It was so awesome. It was perfect for a kid like me. I mean, I was a messy child. You could buy me some of that new, mess free paints, and I'd still manage to just destroy the living room." Daphne twisted her hair around a finger. "I guess I still am like that a bit, and I probably have about the same skill level of painting." She laughed a little bit too loudly, and waited for the next question.
"I see. You should fit right in. May I ask, what are your plans for outside of AGM?"
Daphne took in a deep breath and tried to formulate an acceptable answer. "Well, it's always been kind of my dream to become a musician, but, I mean, I've always had kind of romantic notions. Traveling the world, changing it, that kind of thing." Another deep breath, and then Daphne's motor mouth shot off. "But I know it's important to have a backup plan, and that's what I've been really thinking about lately, like, I really don't want to do what either of my parents do. Law... I don't know, it just seems too rigid, and as far as my dad's business, he runs a construction company. Not exactly my forte... I think... I think my back-up plan at the moment is becoming a teacher." Daphne's cheek's reddened as she explained her reasoning. "I mean, it's something that you can really do, and, well, you can still make a big difference in people's lives!" Her hands went from twirling her hair to playing with her skirt hem once more.
"Huh. That's fine, actually. Uh... would you like to tell me about any hobbies or part-time jobs you have? It may be too difficult to continue once you're on the island."
Daphne sighed and leaned back into the horridly uncomfortable chair. "Well, you've probably guessed it by now, but I'm in a band. We called ourselves The Doldrums, and we were doing awesome! I mean, we had played in a few gigs, opened for a few concerts. We even already had an EP released and a small fanbase!" Daphne, who had been gesturing so widely with her hands that she was almost out of her chair, calmed down a bit and continued. "I just don't know what's going to happen. I mean, I hope the guys can deal with me just being there during breaks, but it wouldn't surprise me if they got someone new. But... I suppose I can always practice here!" Daphne brightened as she realized this. "I mean, I don't know if you guys have a piano and a music room or anything, but I can always bring along my guitar... Write some music and send it to the boys..." Her mind raced, and Daphne was silent for several minutes as she contemplated her new situation.
"We're nearly finished now. But I'd like to know, how do you feel about AGM and super natural powers. I ask you be honest here."
Daphne froze. She had been expecting most of the other questions, but this one definitely caught her off guard. "Oh, well... Hmm. I'm not quite sure how I feel. I love my power, because even when it's out of control, it's still relatively harmless." She looked to the ceiling and thought for a few more minutes. "At the same time, I know what it's like to live with someone with a really dangerous power that they can't control. So, I think what I'm trying to say here is that I really understand the need for a school like this. I think the limitations may be kind of... extreme, but it's also really important to learn to control yourself, especially if it's something that can be really dangerous." Daphne nodded slightly. "Do I wish I could visit my friends and family? Sure, but, hey, there are breaks and the internet." She shrugged, tapping her foot, waiting for the last of the questions to be asked.
"Oh, I see. I have mixed feelings about it myself, but I know what I believe in. Well, great! I think we're finished now. I've gotten a real sense of who you are! Thanks so much for your time and we'll let you know. In the meantime, do you have any questions, comments or concerns?"
Finally! It was over! The tension slowly started to ease itself out of Daphne's body. "You know, I think I'm pretty good on questions. I mean, there's the music thing, but that I can take care of later." Daphne's smile didn't leave her face as she rose to shake the principal's hand, but she did try to (as discreetly as possible) wipe the sweat off of her hand.
