JARED LIAM ROBINSON FRESHMAN 15 FREDDIE RAYNER
"It's my party, dance if I want to..."
"It's my party, dance if I want to..."
"Let's begin, shall we? Tell me about yourself. I want to know everything."
A smile appeared on his face, revealing his deep set dimples. This was one of his favourite topics of conversation. What, a guy can't talk about himself? It was one of the few topics he knew everything about. "Hah. Well, I'm Jared Liam Robinson. Born on May sixteenth. I am currently fifteen years old and I am enrolling to become a freshman at your school." Jared paused for a moment in his speech to compose what he was going to say next. There was so much to talk about himself. "I excel in all sports and at school. Not to mention I am often called a social butterfly. I think I would make a great addition to your school."
'Yes, that will do it.' he thought to himself, in a jokingly smug tone. He wanted to impress this guy. He's had enough of those shitty high schools around town. This was the only place in the whole town than looked decent. Besides, he was invited; how could he resist?
"All right. So you know the truth about this place. What exactly did we invite you to this school for?"
At first, Jared was a bit confused. Shouldn't a principal know the ins and outs of his school? Well, perhaps not, since there seemed to be a high enrolment rate. And it was true, he was invited by staff, not by the principal. He played a long and explained his power. "I can manipulate light. I can any source of light dimmer or brighten. I first discovered it while my parents were having an argument. You know, typical marital disputes. Anyway, I was about six or seven, and I was so stressed that I had actually made all the light disappear. It's literally like your world fades to black. I was so scared at first, but once my mom found me and held me on the dark, it immediately lit up."
"From then on, I've been practising how to lighten and darken the world around me. It's like there is a terrible itch inside my head that I can't scratch. But I've gotten so used to it, it's merely a tickle now. I often wonder if the sensation will ever disappear.... Any-whoo, I'm only able to dim and brighten a certain shades when I'm not stressed; otherwise I can blind you if I'm under great pressure."
Jared's words sounded rehearsed, but trust me when I say that Jared would have never rehearsed. He's quite confident in himself, and assures himself that he doesn't need to do silly things like practise his interview. He's just lucky that he has a wide vocabulary and did a lot of reading as a kid.
"I actually love my power. As a kid, I read a lot of novels. I could read through out the night because I can make it really bright in my room. I also had good sleeps. I would turn off all lights so I wouldn't get any disturbances. Well, I still do those things." Jared laughed a little and gave himself an imaginary pat on the back.
"Oh yes. I see now why we would have invited you. Tell me please, a bit of background information. What is home life to you?"
The smile on Jared's face remained. He loved all this 'talk about yourself' stuff. It was like he was going to therapy without the steeply cost. "Well, if you must know, I am born to Elizabeth and William Robinson of Castles. It was my great grand-mother who had been experimented on by the government. A real shame, what they did to her. They had kid-napped her, because she was an apparent 'threat to the country'. I mean, a seamstress? A threat? I doubt. Anyway, my mother was born with severe hearing problems and then I was born with the ability to manipulate light."
Jared took a moment to think about what he should say next. There were many different aspects of his family he could talk about...he just needed to find the most relevant things to mention to the principal. "I am an only child. This doesn't come as a surprise to others." he rested his elbow on the arm rest and intertwined his fingers. "Although, I've always wanted a younger brother. Anyway, our house was quite average, in the main part of town. I don't suppose that's important though."
"I see. You should fit right in. May I ask, what are your plans for outside of AGM?"
His hand untangled his other fingers so he could scratch his chin thoughtfully. Truth to be told, he doesn't know what he was going to do with his future. I mean, he was still just a freshman; he still had a long time to figure it out right? Whatever. "I'm not sure what I want to take up. I've thought about sports, but I never take it too seriously...so I imagine my career will be shattered by an accident and I won't have a back up plan. Perhaps law? I seem to be witty enough to work around the rules..."
"Huh. That's fine, actually. Uh... would you like to tell me about any hobbies or part-time jobs you have? It may be too difficult to continue once you're on the island."
Hobbies? You mean sports right? "Uh... like I said, sports. I'm good at pretty much all of them. I don't mean to brag--" Jared sat up straight and tried to recover from the serious blow he had just encountered--"I just naturally am coordinated and strong... like most boys, I suppose."
He looked down at his hands, which were now resting on each of his knees. Jared knew he sometimes had a bad habit of boasting about his athletics and power. It usually lead to trouble, so he's been trying to kick the habit before it got out of hand. Jared knew first hand how your words could be turned around and used against you.
"We're nearly finished now. But I'd like to know, how do you feel about AGM and super natural powers. I ask you be honest here."
His elbows rested on the arm rests and his eyebrows furrowed. What did he think of this all? "To be honest, I think it was wrong what they did to my grandmother. But in a way, I'm thankful. If it wasn't for it, I wouldn't have this amazing gift I have now. If everything was 'normal', I'd be working mostly on sports, living a miserable life in a shi--less than satisfactory school system. I also like what AGM is doing to help those who don't necessarily have their power under control. And even if you do, AGM is a great place to meet people like you... I remember how lonely I was during Elementary and Middle school because I didn't know anyone else with special powers like me..."
"Oh, I see. I have mixed feelings about it myself, but I know what I believe in. Well, great! I think we're finished now. I've gotten a real sense of who you are! Thanks so much for your time and we'll let you know. In the meantime, do you have any questions, comments or concerns?"
"Nope! I have my co-ed form here for my dorm .... when can I sign up? Haha, only kidding of course."
