The weather outside seemed to mirror her mood. It was rather cloudly, and it looked very much like it was going to rain. Kale had gone home and grabbed her blue scarf. It was superstition for her to always wear blue when it was supposed to rain, a myth instilled by her grandmother. The walk wasn't far actually, and she had managed to do it fast enough, that she hadn't missed anything between class and lunch.
With a little cringe, she put herself in line for lunch at the cafeteria. She hadn't enough time this morning to prepare herself a lunch, so she'd have to buy one. The hard plastic tray was warm in her hands as her fingers fidgeted nervously. Once again, she was forced to pick a place to eat for lunch. This is one of those high school terrors only advertised by the media. Thankfully, she had arrived early, so there were plenty of empty tables. With great contemplation, she had chosen a smaller table, beside one of the large windows. It could only room maybe four, maybe five if they really tried, however, she was the first one there.
With a relieved sigh she sat down at the table with a little hesitation. Her super-human, enhanced sight has made all of the little marks on the table twenty times more noticeable. Kind of gross, if you think about it. But Kale cowboy'd up and sat down anyway. On her tray, was perfectly laid out pizza, fries, ketchup and chocolate milk. It wasn't exactly her favourite, but she didn't expect much from the school anyway.
Nervously, but diligently, she tore open her carton of chocolate milk and took a delicate sip.

[/style][style= background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/IyEuo.png); border: solid #b9b9b9 15px; width: 400px; height: 200px;] they are my friends and yeah they're all insects Lunch time is always Massy's least favorite time of the day. Particularly when it's humid out and she gets to the cafeteria late--by her own standards, of course, 'late' was by about three minutes. With her cardigan now lying open and her sleeves pushed up, she wished for the pretty sunny winter days with their bizarre warm-chill-warm-chill weather patterns. She didn't like the icy feel of the weather today. It was bizarre, too, but in a much less fun way.
She stood in line for what seemed like hours, and by the time she got up there to ask for a salad, the kid in front of her had taken the last one. Now, Massy isn't one to swear under normal circumstances, but after the day she'd been having, it would have been a nice stress reliever. She did not, however, resort to saying anything rude out loud. The vulgarities kept to her mind. Maybe one day she could join the ranks of silly teenagers who spent their time coming up with new swear words and insults and whatnot, but not today. Instead, she would put greasy, unhealthy, barely edible food into her Healthy Vegeterian body.
"Uh, is there any pizza without pepperoni? I don't eat meat." Massy knew she was holding up the line, but she had waited long enough that she deserved to eat what she wanted. Or, at least, the closest thing that the school cafeteria could provide.
The lunch lady looked her up and down once, then slapped a pepperoni pizza slice down on her plate with a sickening schlunk. "Pick 'em off," she snapped. Massy's cheeks flushed and she hurried down the rest of the line and out into the wild jungle of students and chairs and tables and cliques (old my!). She hurried over to the nearest unoccupied seat and found herself next to another freshman that she remembered from a class or two. Massy glanced at the girl briefly and offered a grim smile. She didn't mind sitting next to her classmate, though it may have seemed that way. She was just in a Very Bad Mood. Though, the collective buzz of excitement radiating off of the rest of the students did serve to be somewhat soothing to her nerves. "Ugh. Can you believe this? They run out of salads within the first five minutes of lunch, and then they don't have the decency to think that they might be serving students with certain diets," she complained uncharacteristically.
While the rant did make Massy feel a little better, she realized that she was being rude and most people didn't take well to complaining, anyway. So her smile returned, this time apologetic, and she used a napkin to peel off the pepperoni. It made her feel queasy and she did not imagine that she would end up eating the pizza. "Uh, anyway, I'm Massy."

[/style][style= background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/IyEuo.png); border: solid #b9b9b9 15px; width: 400px; height: 200px;] yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do. The whole time she sat there and ate her lunch peacefully, her legs were shifted together and she stared straight ahead. However, she by the time she looked down at her food after around three minutes, she realized that it was such small portions. Made sense though, since she was on a diet. She saw so much cellulite in the mirror the other day, Kale vowed to eat half as much as she usually would eat.
With enhanced vision, it's quite easy to spot flaws in your own body. She hated her power because of it. Really, she didn't much benefit to it, other than never needing glasses or to squint when something is far away. Nearly everything was crisp and sharp, in her vision. She knew that she should be thankful for her power, but all it gives her are splitting migraines.
In a jumble of swift movements and blonde hair, a student sat down across from her and Kale winced a little. She wasn't good at these .... awkward conversations, especially introductions. However, the girl seemed her age, and friendly, so she tried to play along, knowing it would be rude not to.
"Kimberly-Anne. But please call me Kale." she said softly as she put down her pizza. "I-I know what you mean..." she started, starting with her eyes closed. She forced them open and continued, "I-I've always wondered why they never have kosher food... not that I'm Jewish or anything... just curious." Kale closed her eyes quickly. Nice one. But she forced them open again.
Even from where she was sitting, Massy was quite pretty. She spotted nearly no flaws in her skin. Kale envied her for it, but she stayed quiet about it, unsure if the timing was socially acceptable. With delicate fingers, she picked up her greasy pizza again and nibbled on it gently.
She couldn't help but think of her older brother and what he would have done in this situation. He probably would have replied with a joke and swooned Massy with just one look. Oh Josh. How did she miss that kid. Kale knew it was only a matter of time until AMG invited, she just wishes that he can come sooner.

[/style][style= background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/IyEuo.png); border: solid #b9b9b9 15px; width: 400px; height: 200px;] they are my friends and yeah they're all insects Massy allowed her own problems to fall off to the side, and she took a moment to give Kale a calculating look as she observed her. Of course, the blonde was not usually one to stare so openly at another person, especially one she had just met, but today she is in a mood fit to take over the world. She could set bridges on fire and throw people over cliffs and sail the seven seas whilst ruling over a marauding band of thieving pirates.
For now, she saw fit to just eat her lunch and talk to Kale, however. The first thing she noticed was how frail this girl looked. Maslynn herself wasn't exactly ferocious, being a very short and thin blonde girl with pale skin and bony limbs, but Kale just looked so breakable. At least Massy wasn't made of glass as thin as Kale's. She thought that if she touched her, just touched her, the whole human body holding this girl together would just burst into tiny shards of clear melted sand and blind everyone in the room. Massy remembered feeling like that pretty often, and she felt a pang of compassion. It was not the condescending, superior, piteous sort of compassion that people often felt, however. Maslynn did not want to take this girl under her wing or anything of the sort. Massy really has no wings to speak of, anyway. It was more of a connection than anything, really.
And then the girl was introducing herself and it didn't much matter what Maslynn thought of her anymore. "Nice to meet you." Massy's sweet, angry-confident demeanor from earlier was fading as she began to forget about her ill bearings and focus her attention on Kale. "Yeah, that's right. I guess it just isn't their problem to worry about." The words were biting and a bit bitter, but Massy managed to pull a light enough tone that she sounded like she was joking. At least, she thought she did.
However, she didn't really want to talk about cafeteria food and how AMG's menu is lacking in variety. Instead, Massy found that she wanted very much to know more about her shiny new acquaintance, so she took a moment to think of something that she could ask casually without making things awkward. However, Massy is sure that she won't be able to. Everything she says seems awkward to her own ears. "Don't we have a class together? How are you liking it here? Making friends and all that jazz?"

[/style][style= background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/IyEuo.png); border: solid #b9b9b9 15px; width: 400px; height: 200px;] yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do. She looked down at her pizza as Massy observed her. Kale was very much aware of her crippling shyness and small frame. It was a build up of all the stress of her whole life. There wasn't really much she could do about it on her own, and she didn't plan on getting professional help anytime soon. Besides, what was there really she could do? This was how she coped the word and it wasn't hurting anyone else, was it?
She was a bit surprised to hear the tone of her voice change from rather angry, to light. It made her feel a little bit more comfortable. Kale had finished nearly all of her pizza, except for a last few bites, so she put it down before she spoke. .In a more confident tone, she began, "Perhaps...but I don't really meet a lot of people in classes. A-And yes, I'm enjoying my time here, and making friends ... but I'm still quite homesick." she smiled sheepishly.
Then on her own account, she continued. "Quite silly to think that I'm homesick. I live in Castles, my house is only a few kilometers away." she laughed softly and then took a sip from her chocolate milk. Kale was glad that she had found someone that wasn't intimidating and friendly to talk to. Seldom did she state something without being asked. This was a big step for her, and she wondered if Massy could tell.
Regardless, Kale was satisfied to a degree with her choice of words and smiled with her lips at the girl that sat before her. With once glance at her food, she declared, "I'm already finished my lunch." She looked down once more at it. On the tray sat a thick pizza crust, half a finished chocolate milk and fries only one quarter finished. That was actually a big meal for her, and she needed to cut down anyway.
She blinked contently at Massy for some guidance, or social queue. Was she supposed to excuse herself now and get to class? Or what? Oh Kale was terrible in these kinds of situations.

[/style][style= background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/IyEuo.png); border: solid #b9b9b9 15px; width: 400px; height: 200px;] they are my friends and yeah they're all insects Maslynn felt a little bit bad for making Kale so visibly uncomfortable by staring at her. Massy herself really hated attention. Now, she didn't mind attention from a whole crowd, but only because she'd had to get over it in order to be a dancer. But concentrated attention from one person was something she was not good at handling. It wasn't a very good combination with her romantic whims, because it was such a struggle for her to feel grounded with someone as a result. Ah, but that's not what she needs to think about right now. She needs to focus on saying socially acceptable, polite things. But Massy has a very bad habit of analyzing her personality (and that of others) constantly, so for a few seconds, that was all she thought about until she was confusing herself and her head started to hurt.
It was a good thing that Kale was talking now. It was a good distraction. Massy gave the girl a small, curious smile and tilted her head to the right. "Yeah, I know what you mean. I miss my family a lot," she said softly. By family, she was mainly referring to Mark, whom she loved more than anything in the whole world. It just made it so much harder to be here without him, even if she knew he had been here before her, walking through the same halls and talking to some of the same teachers, it would have been nice to have a warm hug to go to at the end of a terrible day or a cheeky piece of advice to laugh at whenever she didn't know what to do.
She shook off the loneliness and widened her smile. "That close, hm? Must be nice." Massy could feel all the questions she wanted to ask sitting on the tip of tongue, drinking sweet tea and gossiping with one another. They had no desire to hop down and ask themselves, and Massy wasn't going to force them. She would save them for another day, a sunnier one.
When Kale mentioned that she was done, Massy looked down at her own plate and wrinkled her nose. No, she wouldn't be eating anything today. The offending meat had ruined her appetite. If she was hungry, she could always find Tony later; he carried more food around than books most days. She looked up, and stood, smoothing out her clothes and picking her tray up so she could go and dump it. "There's no way I could eat any of this anyway." Massy looked up at the big clock on the wall to find that they had quite a bit of time to waste before classes started. "Hm. D'you want to go and walk around for a little until the bell rings? We've still got a while." Massy really did hope that Kale wouldn't reject her offer. She didn't mind spending the next twenty minutes by herself, of course, but she was beginning to really like Kale.

[/style][style= background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/IyEuo.png); border: solid #b9b9b9 15px; width: 400px; height: 200px;] yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do. Kale smiled a toothy smile at the girl. It was one filled with relief that Massy had not asked about not finishing her food. To be frank, it saved her a moment of trying to explain how she was trying to lose weight and incredibly OCD about her body. She didn't want to go through the whole lame and cliche process of insisting that she's overweight and have the counter-person argue that she isn't fat. Kale was just simply happy that the two could leave it at that and there was no need to expand on it. In a way, she wished everyone was like that; but sadly, that was not reality. "Yeah, I can hardly eat here anymore," she added, "I usually cook for myself, but today I was running late..."
She got up with shaky hands, hoping that she wouldn't spill or knock over anything. That would be just utterly embarrassing, especially when you're having lunch with a friend for the first time. With great success, Kale pushed her chair back into the crook of the table and picked up her tray to throw away the contents. "Let's," Kale nodded gladly and with a toothless smile. She cautiously pranced over to the trash can beside their table, dumped the remaining food into the plastic bag and plopped the tray on top of the contraption. A few dirty looks were thrown her way, for discarding away so much food, but Kale could care less right now.
The fact that someone had invited her to walk around a bit before class was exciting and also foreign. She had such a strict schedule when it came to school, but it was good to finally take a break. She had noticed lately how much she had fallen into a rut. Her brother's voice echoed in her mind about trying new things. With that, she tried to perk up and do this for her brother. Kale blinked slowly, twice, to hopefully ease the pain of an upcoming migraine.
"Where to, Massy?" she inquired, fixing the hem of her sleeves. Outside the glossy window, she noticed the slightly gloomy weather outside. Kale had nearly forgotten she had changed into something blue for the occasion of rain. It was just some silly superstition between her and her grandmother. "Let's not stay outside for too long ... it looks like it's going to rain," she added, with a crooked smile as she fixed her hair.
