Rai Saithic Black Sophomore 16 Josh Hutcherson
“Ain’t no reason things are this way, it’s how they’ve always been and will always stay. I don’t know why we live this way, but we do it every day.”
“Ain’t no reason things are this way, it’s how they’ve always been and will always stay. I don’t know why we live this way, but we do it every day.”
"Let's begin, shall we? Tell me about yourself. I want to know everything."
Rai smiles and rubs the back of his neck. His smile is charming, calm. He has a sense of surety about himself.
“My name is Rai Saithic Black. Like eye, but with an R in front…Hehe, spelling’s never been my forefront, sorry. I’ve been living in the world for sixteen years, my friend. I was born on July fourth, yep, independence day. I’ll be a sophomore, though who knows how that happened? My ma said it was a stroke of luck.”
"All right. So you know the truth about this place. What exactly did we invite you to this school for?"
Rai frowns slightly, then blinks and seems to perk up.
“I’m an electric manipulator. I can control electric fields. Energy is all around us, see, and I can make it bid to my fitting. Of course, electricity is a lot like fire. You get burned if you play with it too much.” He motions to his arms, flinching. “I can control it when I really think of it, but if my emotions play with me I lose control easily. I can’t do it when I’m sad or angry, for instance. Too happy, I don’t dare because it could get he best of me. You don’t mess with energies, man.”
He tilted his head. “I feel a sharp stabbing sensation in my lower rib cage and in my arms after I perform that task. It feels like someone is poking me with a needle or knife. But it doesn’t leave me exhausted or anything…Just in pain.”
He put his hands in a sort of circular pattern and then focused on an outlet near them. Sparks flew out a few seconds later.
"Oh yes. I see now why we would have invited you. Tell me please, a bit of background information. What is home life to you?"
“I grew up in Jersey. Atlantic City, really. My family was pretty big, and we were pretty poor. We were close nit, though. I looked out for my two brothers, older Cain and younger Joseph and little sister Rachel. My dad used to be in the coal business, but most of that shut down. He lost his job when I was ten. We moved to Castle then. My mom worked hard to put meat on the table, and my dad worked odd jobs. Cain worked around too, and when I turned fourteen I was expected to do something.”
He bit his lip.
“Being friendly with the locals didn’t have a bad touch. I started to deal what I could. It worked for me. If anyone tried to mess with me, I had my power. I did it for two years And it impressed people. My girl was really impressed. She and I were, ah, making out one day when I tried to impress her by making a big firework of a show with my powers. I built up the electricity so that it was a ball around me, and I was going to let it melt into the ground. However, I was so excited that I accidently let it come on to me…And it burned through my cloths and arms. My girl saved me, but she dumped me after I got out of the hospital.
“I was in the hospital for a long time, and medical bills piled up. The government found out about what had happened and, well, the offered to pay my bills if I came here. I couldn’t burden my family with my stupidity, could I? I stopped dealing, packed my bags and left. Joseph and Rachel try to talk to me, but I think Cain hates me…”
He looks up. It was his fault.
"I see. You should fit right in. May I ask, what are your plans for outside of AMG?"
Rai blinks and bites his lip, shrugging. “I’m not sure. I, uh, might join the peace corps….Or something…I want to get out of this country, but I’m not sure how. I’ll get a good job for sure…Maybe a vet…Or a teacher…” he chuckles.
“I really have no idea, man. My life coasts. I don’t think to far ahead. Where I grew up, that’ll kill you.”
"Huh. That's fine, actually. Uh... would you like to tell me about any hobbies or part-time jobs you have? It may be too difficult to continue once you're on the island."
“You can’t kick me out for what I used to do, can you? I used to deal. Big time. It put meat on the table. And I took care of my brothers and sisters. In reality, I didn’t have much time for extra circulars. I know some parqour. You know, running off of walls and stuff. I used to compete with the guys doing that. It was pretty fun. Used to skate too, but I was pretty cruddy at that. I know how to play guitar and saxophone from Cain, and I’m pretty good.” Rai smiles. He isn’t sure what else to say. He didn’t have much of a childhood, really.
"We're nearly finished now. But I'd like to know, how do you feel about AMG and super natural powers. I ask you be honest here."
Rai smiles, leans back and puts his arms around his neck. “I love the power, man. But, you know, it’s gotten me into some stuff that I’d rather not have been in. If you know what I mean. But electricity is one power I like having. It’s energy that’s all around us, and it bids to me, man. Well, not really, but I can make it bid to me some day. And I like that…That power,”
"Oh, I see. I have mixed feelings about it myself, but I know what I believe in. Well, great! I think we're finished now. I've gotten a real sense of who you are! Thanks so much for your time and we'll let you know. In the meantime, do you have any questions, comments or concerns?"
“Peace.”
