He wore a blue and black striped pullover and a pair of dark wash jeans. His hair? Tousled. His face? Perfect, like always. He whistled a a happy tune as he made his way down the side walk toward the front entrance of the American Montessori for the Gifted. Even though he was a freshman, he already loved the school. Perhaps it was the fact that everyone here knew of and openly talked about their powers. It was much better than the lonely environment he had growing up. At least here, he felt a part of something.
Now, enough of that softy, mushy stuff. Back to the scene. Jared didn't walk down the hallway. He strutted down it. Jared had been so determined not to get lost the first day, that he practically memorized everything about the school. He stopped for a moment at his locker, located in the main East hallway to check his schedule. 8:30am - Special Abilities Classes, 9:30am - Math 20 ... His stomach did a little flip. He loved SAC. He was so good at his ability already, the class was no problem. He just got a kick out of seeing the other element manipulators mess up and potentially hurt themselves. It was refreshing, he must say.
Jared kept his student handbook rested on his hip and his other hand in his pocket as he walked down the other hallways. He needed to go to the back entrance where the tarmac and his SAC was. What? You can't practice element manipulation inside! Are you crazy? They'd tear the whole school apart, that's for sure. But on his way, Jared rambled on in his mind. 'All right... so until ten thirty do I have math and then Science, right? Yes... then after that is lunch! Glorious lunch! I could have myself a real good meal, I have saved up quite a bit now... but maybe I should just wait ? Nah...' It continued like this until he spotted something--or someone--out of the corner of his eye.
It was a girl. Pretty too. 'Wow she's gorgeous. Wonder if she's a freshman? Doubt it, she looks too sophisticated.' he thought to himself as he checker her out quickly. She was at her locker, and Jared could only see her back, luscious hair and the side of her face. Ah, but it was enough for a double take. As he passed her, he shrugged off the idea and continued on his journey to his SAC.

Jane walked down the hallways with a piece of paper in her hand. She glanced at the paper closely, arching an eyebrow in confusion. It showed her her class schedule, she had already stopped to visit her locker earlier. She was returning to it now to drop off this heavy book. She did not need it right about now and refused to carry it around all day. She walked pass a young man who offered to help her, her cheeks turned a light color of red and she shook her head no. "no thank you." she said. She just wanted to get to where she needed to be. Also, to put things nicely, he wasn't the best person to look at. Jane walked quickly to her locker as she turned the corner. Stopping as she opened it she turned and looked at a group of girls who were staring her way. They were whispering words to each other but were judging Jane by the clothes she had on. She was dressed quite plain today. She was dressed in a white spring dress, with a half cut jean jacket. She didn't think it really mattered. She didn't understand why girls felt it was necessary to spend hours in the mirror preparing themselves to walk down the halls to unload and carry books. Just to sit in class, write down notes, and walk themselves back to their dorms.
She sighed, deciding to ignore it. It was hard to not use this power of hers. It was a mental thing. She hadn't yet learned how to block peoples thoughts off. If she did she'd be doing it now. Once she opened her locker she took in a deep breath, placing down her books. She grabbed the one she'd need for her next class. It was an English class. Her favorite subject. All English had to with really was grammar and analyzing paragraphs. Coming up with summaries and explanations. It was all there in front of you. Unlike math that had only one answer. She hated math, and wasn't very good at it. Math only had one right answer, when it came to English it varied.
She loved this school. It felt nice to know around she was around other gifted people, and that being 'gifted' at AMG was just another normal thing. For the first time in a long time she felt normal. She made close friends, and it was just really enjoyable to her. Everything about this place. Jane closed her locker as she noticed a guy walking down the hall. She had caught him glance at her, and she had looked away. However, she had heard everything he was thinking. The guy was very handsome. Well, that was an understatement. He was gorgeous. He walked with confidence too. She was interested. She wasn't one to just go up to a guy and hand out her number, but saying hello never hutrt She closed and locked her locker and turned, walking besides him casually before speaking. "I'm not by the way.." she started, "a freshmen I mean..I'm not a freshmen." she said and stopped, figuring he'd stop with her so she could talk to him. "and thanks for the compliment, you're pretty cute yourself." she said. She noticed how odd this might sound to him so she laughed a little, "Oh, I'm sorry..I'm Jane. I'm a senior here. I guess, as you've guessed. I can read minds and what not..." she said, extending her hand for a shake.

She tagged along beside him, speaking to him as if she knew what he was thinking. At first, Jared was a little shocked ... and felt a little violated. How exactly did she know if he wondered whether or not she was a freshman? But it made sense when she mentioned that she could read minds. Man, AMG certainly attracted a special kind of group. What a dumb statement. Of course it did! It was a school for the gifted!
He stopped his elegant walk, faced the girl and shook her hand. A soft laugh escaped him, "I'm Jared. It's nice to meet you. Actually, I'm quite relieved that you can read minds. I was thinking that I must have said it out loud." a small blush appeared on his face. A senior hey? Shoot. No senior would be interested in a freshman. But hey, this just calls for a more interesting relationship. "And I am the Freshman." he laughed softly, a nervous laugh tousled his hair a bit with his free hand. What will she think?
"So you can read minds huh? Doesn't that get annoying though?" He asked, sliding his hand back down into his warm pocket. His arms were relaxed and he looked at her with utter confidence. Oh well, would you look at that! He was just a bit taller. She was really pretty...but she already knew that. And he liked the way she took initiative when he thought about her. He could imagine that most girls would blush and think nothing of it.
"My power isn't as extravagant. Yours is from the A list!" he said in a joking tone and with a smile on his face that showcased his deep-set dimples.

Jared. That was a nice name. Plus, it started with a J, and Jane liked names like that personally. It really wouldnt have mattered if he said it aloud or not. She'd har both either way, unless he whispered it- she couldn't hear whispers. She didnt have supernatural hearing. She just read minds, as simple as that. Then again, she didnt know why anyone would whisper anything out and about. Well, only her parents. They did that so she couldnt hear what they were saying. It was a violation of privacy, Jane knew it was but she couldn't help it. She smiled in response, instead of saying something cliche like: It wouldnt have made a difference. Sometimes this power could be frustrating. Then it could be helpful to. For example, times like these, cute boys being attracted to you. Then those cute boys being...freshmen. Wait, freshmen! Did he just say that. Jane had thought he simply wondered if she was a freshmen in hopes of her not being one, due to some potential fact that he was older. No, he definitely said he was a freshmen.
She frowned for a quick second, looking up at him. He was rather tall, and was much more handsome than, well, adorable like some of the other childish freshmen around here.
"I would have never guessed" she said aloud. Dang, they're all either too young..or gay she thought. All the extra good looking guys were always unattainable to her. Too old, too young, not attracted to women. Yes, it sucked. The way he stared at her was distracting though. He had so much confidence. Maybe he was born in the wrong year? Or somehow something strange happened with the time zone in his life and his life paused for a good two years and he woke up the same age as he did before his life paused!? No, no- he was just a freshmen. Pity. It really was. "Yes, it get's frustrating." she started. "Sucks when you know that people hate you and act all nice to you one second. Or they think you're absolutely hideous." she shrugged "But i've gotten used to it. " she said.
When he smiled, she smiled back at him. He had a gorgeous smile. Those dimples were set on his face so precisely. "Well..I dont know about that. Tell me about yours?" she asked.

Damn. Maybe if he didn't mention it, he would have for sure passed off as a grade older. Heck, maybe even a senior too! Ah well. Honesty was the best policy, wasn't it? Oh, so cliché. That was so Jared. To her comment, his face formed a half smile. He could help but admire her. There was nothing worse than two-faced liars. The poor girl probably encountered a lot of them. Especially in girl world, where all the fights were handled through drama and bullying.
"I suppose all the insults have made your skin tougher. Besides, if anyone thought you were hideous, they're just plain jealous." he added, trying to reassure her a bit. But what she said was true. She'd probably has had the ability to read minds for years now and she was bound to get used to it sometime. Still though, it's gotta be tough. "You must have heard some pretty weird things over the years." Jared's smile grew as he thought of hearing a man's thoughts while he was horny. Oh man, that would be brutal! What about tests? Maybe she's used them during exams. He doubted, but the temptation was there. He'd have to ask her about it later.
A smug smile appeared on his face as she asked him about his power. Yet again, he was asked to talk about himself. He loved this topic, since it was so easy to dish out information. All accurate information, if he says so himself. Jared let out a chuckle before continuing, "Well, I can manipulate light." he said, more as a question really, than a statement. "The light all around us ... I can dim it or make it brighter." he shrugged, "Not exactly premium, but it got me here didn't it? Haha, and besides, it helps cut down on the electrical bill."

This guy was very sweet, and he was being genuine. He wasnr just saying these things as a lie. She would know if he was of course. She giggled a little, , glancing down at the ground for a quick second, gripping onto her book with one hand. She moved a stray piece of hair behind her ear. One would think hearing so many insults made her tougher, but really it broke her down over the years. Jane has insecurity issues. But, no one needed to know about those. Sometimes she thought she wasn't pretty enough. That she wasn't 'hott' enough. She was a skinny girl, and usually girls her age had amazing curves. Curves to die for. Where she was from thats what everyone wanted. She felt like she looked like a young girl, a young unattractive girl. Besides her gift, she felt there was nothing special about her physically. Still, he didnt need to know that, she just nodded, agreeing.
She laughed. Of course she heard some very weird things over the years. Outrageous thins. Some of her high school teachers were complete pervs. Some of the girls in her class were closet lesbians in the past. Girls had dirty minds too. Wondering how big a guy was, and all of that junk. They'd walk around comparing themselves to other girls constantly. They always thought about their secrets, which really bothered Jane. However, that was what the mind was for..to vent to ones own self. This power was a good one if you knew how to use it right. "Yes, some people really aren't who you think they are..some are very gross, some are very perverted, some are very..well..some people dont use their heads at all actually." she chuckled. Some people absolutely didnt think to much at all. She liked being around those people.
His power was interesting. Being able to control light. It made for good use. She grinned when he said it was good for the electric blil, "and setting a mood, i hear." she said. Most people dimmed the lights when they tried to get all romantic and what not. "But you dont have to worry about that yet, young thing." she winked, simply teasing him. She felt comfortable enough to do so. She didn't think it would bother him much.

Surprisingly, he hadn't thought of it that way. And she had given him a wink! So it was like that. He admired girls who used their sexuality as a point of leverage. Like Megan Fox. She was a babe, true, but Jane was a real girl, much better than some kind of fantasy. "Perhaps I do want to worry." he said, releasing some unwanted energy by rocking onto his toes.
From the corner of his eye, he saw a familiar face from his SAC scurry away down the hall, papers flying everywhere. What was that all about? Oh, shoot! He had been so caught up on Jane that he had forgotten they were supposed to get to class. Awe, but he didn't want to end this conversation. It was exciting and refreshing to make new friends. "Where's your next class? I have SAC next, outside on the concrete." he asked her, using his free hand to point down the hall. He glanced quickly at her books to see what she had next. "English? That's on the way right? C'mon, let's walk."
Jared took a stride in his initial direction. He had the temptation to lightly rest his arm on her shoulders, but he was unsure if they were there yet. Instead, he settled for walking beside her rather closely. "So tell me, Jane. When exactly did you figure out you could read minds?" His body faced down the hall, but he continuously glanced toward her, to see her pretty face. "For me, and a lot of people, I had first used my power during a fight between parents. They're still married and all, but you know, it was so stressful for me. I had made the whole area dark. My parents thought there was a black out." His face was still frowning a bit as he reminisced. He wondered if she could see what he saw. Probably not ... and maybe that was for the best.

Jane grinned, she couldnt believe she had just said that. 'Setting the mood'. She had just said that to some freshman! What did she know about setting the mood anyways? She was still, well, you know, inexperienced. Sometimes her friend back and home would talk about that stuff and she'd nod with a smile on her face, acting like she knew what they were talking about. Where she was from, being inexperienced wasnt cool. It was something that all the guys wouldnt talk to you about, and girls would poke fun at you for. It just wasnt cool. There was no greater way to express that. When he said that he did want to worry she just chuckled a little. He was too young to think those thoughts! At least she thought so. When she was a freshmen all she thought about was candy and writing the casual: 'Do you like me, yes or no?' cards to people, and it was a big deal if you made out with someone. Then again, that was in her own little mind. Her own little world. Things were much more different than they used to be.
She noticed everyone walking down the hallways started doing so much more quicker. She glanced at her schedule when he asked her the question. "oh..uh..." she started, then he insisted he knew where it was. She followed him, smiling, he was quite mature for his age. "Looks like you've done your homework, you know this place very well." she said. She could only imagine all of the lost freshmen freaking out because they couldnt find their first class.
She walked besides him, not too far away, close enough. She tried to think back at when she discovered she could read minds, "Well, I was like super young. I was in kindergarten I think it was." she started, "I was at home and my mom had thought about leaving my dad, but she was worried about me.. I asked her why she wanted to leave him. She asked me how I knew, and I told her I heard her say it..Then whenever my parents would argue they'd think things, i'd question it, then they started to test me..they'd think things and ask me what they were thinking.." she laughed, thinking back at it. "I was always the kid that knew what everyone was thinking about...well, everyone." she said, she didnt discover her power unti she was a young child. Still, that was a while back, she was seventeen now.

He already lost his VCard this year. You can't really expect a group of young people to live on an island and not smoosh. With all the parties and the booze and the drugs, it was just natural. It wasn't special though. He could hardly remember it, he was a bit high. Yes, he knew it was terrible, but hey! He only lived once. If anyone OD'd on the island, anyone of those teleporters could pop them into a hospital ... or one of those magic healing people. It was like they were invincible as long as they had each other.
He was happy that she thought he was mature for his age. That meant all those late nights reading books had really paid off. Most people say he has a wide vocabulary, but he seldom uses it casual conversations. He thought back to his shelves and shelves of books that lined nearly every wall of his room. Reading certainly was his passion. There was something about it that took him to a different world. Feeling the paper under your thumb or smelling the newly printed ink on the paper. It was a different kind of high. Regardless, he appreciated that Jane said it out loud. "Truth to be told, I was so scared of getting lost, that I studied the map in out handbook before coming here." he chuckled.
Jared nodded with sympathy for her. Yes, he knew the stress you undergo when parents argue. It's unsettling. Your two most beloved people ready to rip each others throats out. "Huh." he added, "So we're not that different after all." Jared bumped into her on purpose. Lightly though. In a joking manner. Conversation with Jane was easy and it seemed to flow easily. He could see a great relationship growing ... but he was certain it was just going to be a friendship.
"So how come I haven't heard of you? The beautiful girl who could read minds? Surly you have been in one of my conversations.... perhaps we have mutual friends?" Jared tried to think of people in his circle of friends that she may know. He was stuck. This girl seemed to appear out of no where! Maybe she's heard of me, he thought to himself. Oh shoot, she can hear that. And this! Uh .... hi? he thought out loud, with a concerned look on his face. This is embarrassing ... She thought it was adorable how much studying he did before to make sure he didn't get lost. It was paying off. He was walking down these hallways like he knew everything and everywhere. Like he even knew how each room was structured. He had the most amazing confidence she has yet seen in all these freshmen. He's freakin' adorable! she thought to herself, good thing he couldnt read her thoughts? She nodded, "well, it's paid off." she said, "soon enough they'll hire you to start giving tours. Mistaking you for one of the older kids." she teased him slightly. She knew she sure did mistake him for being older than he really was. She thought junior at the least.
She grinned at what he said. Taking it as if his parents had problems too. Jane's parents certainly did. She wouldnt be surprised if they divorced each other soon. They were always bickering and arguing over stupid things. The only thing they agreed on, really, was letting Jane go to this school. There was always an argument between the two of them. Sometimes Jane thought they just enjoyed the banter, they enjoyed the arguing. It brought the spice to their relationship or something? She didn't understand it. She never understood why people enjoyed dysfunctional relationships. You wanted someone to lift you up, not tear you down and lift you up, bring you up and down like you were some type of basketball hitting the pavement. She grinned when he brushed the side of her, staring up at him. He was so adorable, it wasn't right. She was pretty sure he was going to be all the little freshmen girls heart-throb. "I guess not." she said.
She shrugged when he asked why he didnt hear about her. He had called her beautiful, and it had sounded so nice. She just brushed it off though. They might have had mutual friends. Jane befriended all of the other people from different grades, so it was a possibility. "It's possible." she said, then heard him thinking, to himself. She had glanced at him then away. "Dont be embarrassed," she said. "I'm working on how to control it. I hate being in peoples heads." she said, "Hearing all their thoughts, then they start thinking about how I'm hearing their thoughts..and well, you know how that goes." she chuckled a little. But she honestly hated making people uncomfortable.

He was a bit embarrassed that she could hear his thoughts. Does that meant no one in her life gave her a sense of mystery? Hopefully she'll find someone who was immune to her power and would treat her right. Jared certainly wasn't the guy for the job though. Commitment was just too scary. Relationships can get messy and people get hurt. Most people say it's worth the mess, but is it really?
"Haha, yeah..." he said, voice trailing off. He had run out of things to say. Oh shoot. Be quick! But before he could anything else, he noticed that they had reached her English classroom. And just down the hall was the exit to the tarmac. Jared was disappointed to see her leave, he really did like talking to her and they had a lot in common.
"This is you." Jared added, before stopping and facing the classroom. He pointed lightly with the hand holding the notebook. Daww, did it really have to end? Yes, he was going to be late for his SAC! "When can I see you again?" he smiled, a small blush appearing on his face. Jared leaned on the closest locker and looked at Jane with the most genuine content. Abruptly, he thought of his cellphone. Yes, of course!
He transferred the notebook to his other hand and dug inside his pocket for his cellphone. And after an aggressive tug of war with his jean pocket, he managed to get the thing out of the cotton trap. "Did you want to exchange numbers?" He asked, looking up from his cellphone in a sheepish way.

Whn he dropped her off she looked at the door. He was certainlyright, he knew where he was going. "Yep, thats me." she said with a grin. It sort of sucked that they couldnt stay and chat for a bit longer. She thought he was pretty interesting. The way he carried himself and the way it was so easy to speak with him. When he asked when he could see her again she tilted her head to the side and thought. That was a good question. She had classes and she wasnt sure how much homework she'd have to do every week. She caught the small clush of his cheeks and couldnt help but gigle. He was so damn.....attractive! She couldnt even call him cute in this case. Every thing he did was attractive. "Well I pretty much have no social life. I'm sure I can fit you into my 'oh so busy' schedule." she teased.
When he pulled out his phone she nodded. "Oh, yeah!" she thought, shifting her books into one arm and reaching for her phone out of her pocket. "Yeah, here..save your number for me." she said handing him her phoena nd taking his to do the same. She typed in her name: Old Jane. Just teasing him a little, because she felt so old right about now! She didnt tell him what she save dher name as, but she had gave him back his phone. Besides, when she texted him he'd see it.

He was a bit slow, but he managed to save himself as JARED THE BEAST in all caps. She probably wouldn't see it until later, but he was sure that she'd get a kick out of it. Jared locked her phone and passed it back to her, a little bit sad to see her go. With some hesitation he took his phone back and shrugged, "I guess I'll just see you around?" he propped himself off of the locker glided his hand back into his pocket.
"See you." he smiled, letting out a small, chuckle before turning around and heading toward his SAC class. But as soon as he reached the corner, where Jane was sure not to see him, he paused for a moment to take out his cellphone. He managed to get it open and scroll through the contacts. At first, he was a little perplexed. There were no Jane's in his phone. Then he was hurt, had she not saved her number into his phone? Perhaps she didn't want some freshman contacting her. He locked it with a saddened heart and slipped it back into his pocket.
Then with a frown, he opened the doors to the concrete field where he was to practice his light manipulation. Perhaps she'd text him on his number and then he will see if she really did save her number there. In the meantime, he gathered around in a circle with his fellow classmates fidgeted with the phone in his pocket.
