ASHLEY SARAH MILLER SOPHOMORE 16 ELLEN PAGE
"I'm my own worst enemy"
"I'm my own worst enemy"
"Let's begin, shall we? Tell me about yourself. I want to know everything."
"My name is Ashley Sarah Miller", she answered very directly, "I'm here for my sophomore year. I turned sixteen this May." It was hardly everything, but she leaned back and crossed her arms in a way that signaled that she wasn't going to say anything more.
"All right. So you know the truth about this place. What exactly did we invite you to this school for?"
"These aren't for show", she responded flatly, giving a small nod to her wings. Her white, supposedly angelic wings. They hadn't always been there. Only since she was, what, six years old? Yeah, she'd been around six years old when they'd first emerged from her back, smaller than they were now. Less sensitive as well, and much easier to... control. To restrain.
As the years passed, it had become more difficult. The wings grew as she did, and for every time they were restrained, the more it hurt to bind them. The more the things hurt. Being tied down isn't a pleasant feeling, and unfortunately she can still remember it bright as day.
One of the white, feathery things flinched, and she bit the inside of her lip hard enough to almost draw blood.
"I suppose I'm here so that you can teach me how to fly", she commented dryly. She was basically hopeless at that, as she hadn't had much practice.
"Oh yes. I see now why we would have invited you. Tell me please, a bit of background information. What is home life to you?"
"Well, I grew up with both my parents, a twin and a younger sister", she started, "we weren't super rich, but, we got by just fine. None of my siblings are like me - they are both normal - but they didn't treat me differently..."
She got quiet, thinking it over for a minute. Her twin brother, Aaron, had never seemed to care about the white things growing out of her back, while her three year younger sister Alice had been envious. Ashley couldn't, no, can't, for the life of her understand why.
They had all gotten along fine. When she and Aaron reached their teens, however, she'd started to pull away. As Alice was some years younger, Aaron was the one who got the worst of it. Despite them being twins, she felt as though he couldn't understand - and even that he despised her, and wanted to hurt her. This wasn't true, of course, just a result of her own insecurities... but she had said some horrible things to him, more than once. She still regretted it.
Pushing the thoughts aside, she cleared her throat and continue, "My parents never abused me, despite my abnormality, and... they did the best they could with me, even when business was hard. They are great people, and..." They deserved so much better than me. "...yeah. I care for them a lot."
"I see. You should fit right in. May I ask, what are your plans for outside of AGM?"
"To be honest with you I haven't thought about it too much, but I suppose I would like to live and work in the "real world". Maybe own a little shop, or work as a librarian..." She trailed off, biting her lower lip. The issue wasn't what she wanted to do, but, would anyone want to hire a winged freak? "For now I just want to study. Some more years of that and I'll probably know for sure."
"Huh. That's fine, actually. Uh... would you like to tell me about any hobbies or part-time jobs you have? It may be too difficult to continue once you're on the island."
"I used to help out at my parents' restaurant quite a lot", she admitted, knowing that she wouldn't be able to continue that once on the island. She wasn't going to miss it that much though. It was just a way to pass time. For her parents to keep track of her, too. "Other than that, there's nothing I won't be able to continue on Grace Island."
And she wasn't going to go into more details. It wasn't anything bad, per say - singing, a little bit of writing, reading - but she didn't feel like mentioning it. Especially not the singing. That was a little secret of hers.
"We're nearly finished now. But I'd like to know, how do you feel about AGM and super natural powers. I ask you be honest here."
Ashley, for once, didn't answer right away. Instead, she threw a look out the window, and thought about how to answer. Being honest wasn't the problem - it was choosing the right words. People who looked and worked as a normal human beings, whose power was invisble to the naked eye, but still approached her as if they were somehow the same... people like that irritated her. They could get by as normal. She couldn't. Was it envy? Probably. It angered her, too.
But she wasn't going to admit that. Certainly not to the principle.
"I think it's good that there's a place like AGM", she answered at last. "I haven't met many others with supernatural abilities, yet, but I guess it... could be useful."
"Oh, I see. I have mixed feelings about it myself, but I know what I believe in. Well, great! I think we're finished now. I've gotten a real sense of who you are! Thanks so much for your time and we'll let you know. In the meantime, do you have any questions, comments or concerns?"
"No, I don't", she said, managing a smile of sorts, as she rose to her feet. "Thank you for having me."
