"Let's begin, shall we? Tell me about yourself. I want to know everything."
An easy grin lit up Stetson's face. He loved to talk about himself. He wasn't conceited, exactly, just very open. He doesn't think excessively high of himself, in any case.
"The name's Stetson Gilliam. Everyone calls me Tony. I just turned 17 on June 1st and hopefully gonna be a senior at your school.
Tony paused for a moment and considered what else he could add about himself. He figured that the principal just wanted the basics for the moment. He kicked his right foot out and back lightly, wrapping it around the leg of the chair. His right hand went up to scratch his left ear; a nervous habit. When he was younger--I mean way younger, back when people still called him Stet--he used it as a tactic to hide his face when he was blushing, which he did a lot.
"I had pretty decent grades back at my normal school. All A's and B's except for math," he added honestly. "No one in my family is very good at math." He chuckled at a memory of his sisters, his eyes glazing over for a moment. He snapped out of it and shook his bangs out of his face. "I'm a hard worker, though. I think I'll do much better here."
"All right. So you know the truth about this place. What exactly did we invite you to this school for?"
Tony caught himself before reaching up to scratch his ear again. Ironically, his power made him a bit insecure. He thought it made people trust him less.
"I can turn invisible," he answered gruffly, demonstrating momentarily with his hand. He held it up with a grin.
"Now you see it . . ." Starting at the fingertips, the colors began to leak out of his hand. Tony was still trying to process his ability; he wasn't exactly sure how he did it. "Now you don't."
Much faster than it had gone, his hand reappeared. Tony let it drop and turned his gaze back to the professor with a grin. "I'm still getting used to it. I didn't discover it until real recently. Scared my mom half to death when she saw a sweatshirt and jeans but no Tony." He was able to keep from laughing aloud at this memory. "Anyway, I've been told about the genetic business since then, and I think it was probably my dad, or my mom isn't telling me something, because I never met my dad."
Tony shrugged and reached up to push his bangs out of his eyes. "Anyway, my mom had sure heard of it at least. I've been trying to get it under control since I found out, but I still have my moments. I wake up completely invisible most mornings. It's getting easier to get back to normal, but I still haven't figure out exactly how I do it, which is the hardest part. Getting back is easy; it's like there's a place in my mind, sort of like a string that I can pull on. Like with those old fashioned lights, you know? I just pull on it. It's hard to find, sometimes. Even harder if I'm stressed out.
Tony was really eager to start training with his ability. He wanted to be able to change and come back at will. He thought, idly, that it would have been really cool if he had gotten super speed. He wondered if there was anyone at this school who could do that.
"Oh yes. I see now why we would have invited you. Tell me please, a bit of background information. What is home life to you?"
Tony's grin returned and settled in like an old relative who hasn't been to visit for a while. He really did love to talk about himself. "Well, it's me, my mom, Keith, and my two little sisters. Hailey and Bailey are twins. They're Keith's kids, so they're only my half-sisters. They don't look like me, and I look like my dad, so people ask if I'm adopted and stuff like that. It's crazy. But, anyway, I love my sisters. They're only 7. They're really cute. Keith is alright. We don't really get along and we argue sometimes, but it's not like he's a drunk or anything, so I guess I'm lucky. Uh, we go to church every Sunday and everythin' and we're really small-town. I don't actually, you know, believe in religion or anything, but I pick my battles. An hour of my time once a week to keep my family happy isn't gonna kill me, you know?
"I'm really nervous about leaving, honestly. I'm really close to my mom and my sisters, but I can always go back to them. I need to learn how to use my powers while I can."
Tony stopped talking at that point, deciding that he had said enough for now. Besides, if he didn't stop, he was going to launch into every funny story he had to tell about his family and that would just depress him. He could tell already that he was going to be homesick.
He tried not to think, however, of the two family members he did not mention; his dad and his older sister, neither of whom he had seen in years. Though, Stella, he had at least met.
"I see. You should fit right in. May I ask, what are your plans for outside of AGM?"
Tony wasn't too put off by this question, since he was still caught up in the bittersweet emotions that came with talking about his family. However, he was no longer smiling.
"I haven't really put too much thought into it," he said lamely. Tony wasn't really one to think about the future. He was a take-it-as-it-comes sort of guy. He wasn't really sure that it would, but he couldn't help being a little paranoid that this might be the reason he didn't get in.
"Huh. That's fine, actually. Uh... would you like to tell me about any hobbies or part-time jobs you have? It may be too difficult to continue once you're on the island."
Tony puffed up his bangs with a heavy sigh. "I'm pretty athletic, but I'm mostly into soccer and water-skiing. I play a little guitar here and there, too, but it's not my passion."
Tony suddenly wished that the principal would ask about his family again. At least then he would have something more interesting to say.
"We're nearly finished now. But I'd like to know, how do you feel about AGM and super natural powers. I ask you be honest here."
Tony leaned back in his chair and took a moment to assess his opinion. His first thought was of the excitement he'd carried with him ever since he had found out about. He felt a little shortchanged, there, because all the other students were probably really familiar with their abilities by now, and here was, treating his like he was a child that had just discovered The Most Amazing Toy in the Universe.
"Well, I think it's pretty thrilling. The whole idea of it. For some powers, anyway. A lot of them can be dangerous. I feel like the school is sort of a safe place, but at the same time, isolating us can make us feel a little more left out all the time, you know? All in all, I'm in favor of it."
"Oh, I see. I have mixed feelings about it myself, but I know what I believe in. Well, great! I think we're finished now. I've gotten a real sense of who you are! Thanks so much for your time and we'll let you know. In the meantime, do you have any questions, comments or concerns?"
Tony shook his head no and stood up, reaching over to shake the principal's hand. His mother had taught him a long time ago that if you don't shake a man's hand before you leave his office, it is one of the most supreme offenses. Tony didn't really share her opinion, but he did it anyway because it was polite and because he had the feeling that his mom would chew him out like a rag doll if he came home without his manners.
